Land Acknowledgement
Weyt-kp! We respectfully acknowledge the lands where our team lives, works, and learns, located within the unceded traditional territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, members of the Interior-Salish Secwepemc-speaking peoples of British Columbia. The Secwépemc people have maintained deep relationships with the Land, Water, Plants, and Animals, and continue their stewardship today. As guests on Secwepemcúl’ecw, we recognize our shared responsibility to learn from these teachings and to uphold values of respect, reciprocity, and care.
This project is made possible through collaborations across two post-secondary institutions. We acknowledge that Thompson Rivers University is located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc within Secwepemcúl’ecw. We also acknowledge that the University of British Columbia is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations at the Vancouver campus, and the unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation at the Okanagan campus. In our work on this project, we are committed to teaching and learning about the impacts of colonialism and honoring the responsibilities we share in building respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities and the non-human beings of these Lands.
About Microbe Mysteries
We created Microbe Mysteries to help make science more accessible to young readers by offering a fun and friendly way to learn about microbiology. Many children grow up thinking all microbes are bad germs because of how they are shown in movies, news, and popular culture. This thinking can lead to a fear of germs and a misunderstanding of how important microbes really are.
To help change that, our graphic novel brings the invisible world of microbiology to life through bright illustrations and lighthearted storytelling. By mixing art with simple explanations, the book makes complex scientific ideas easy to follow and enjoyable to read. Our goal is to spark curiosity in young minds, helping students learn that most microorganisms are actually helpful friends that keep our bodies and planet healthy.
To make these essential concepts accessible to an even wider audience, we are continuously expanding this website with translations of our graphic novel. You can find the latest translated copies of our Microbe Mysteries under the drop-down “Translation” tab. This initiative would not be possible without our volunteer translation team.
